These alaias are made to feel as if they have been floating in the bay for a hundred years. They are hand carved from a reclaimed Paulownia tree by Greg Melega on Long Beach Island. The wood was salvaged and milled by Greg and some friends from a massive tree in Philadelphia. After the slabs dried for several years and were shaped, the wooden surfboards were distressed and then sealed in many layers of a homemade, natural oil finish.
The alaia is one of the original surfboards dating back thousands of years. Made out of solid wood, these boards are a reminder of the energy put into creating a surfcraft and the deep connection to nature it has always provided people.
The boards are 6’1 tall by 17” wide with carved live edge rails and a swallow tail.
